AUD/USD (AUDUSD)

AUD/USD is the exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the US dollar. Because Australia is a major commodity exporter, the pair is unusually sensitive to demand from Australia's trading partners in addition to the direct AUD/USD policy drivers.

What moves AUD/USD?

AUDUSDCNYNZD

RBA rate decisions and Australian employment/inflation data set the direct policy-rate expectations that move the Australian dollar.

Federal Reserve policy and US data move the pair from the quote-currency side, the same as any USD pair.

China is Australia's largest trading partner and the largest buyer of its iron ore and other commodity exports, so Chinese growth and manufacturing data (PMI, GDP) move commodity-demand expectations and, with them, the Australian dollar — even though CNY isn't part of the pair's name.

The Australian and New Zealand dollars are historically highly correlated commodity currencies with intertwined regional trade ties, so major New Zealand data or RBNZ moves often spill over into AUD/USD sentiment.
