Tools / Challenge Buffer
How much of your loss limit is left?
How much of your daily and total loss limits is still unspent. Enter losses as negative numbers: a profitable day spends none of the buffer.
FormulaDaily Buffer Used % = max(0, −Daily P&L) ÷ Max Daily Loss × 100
The formula above is exactly what this calculator runs, in full view. Never trust a number blindly, verify it: check it against your own broker's or prop firm's figures before you rely on it. You are responsible for every value you enter here; the result is for reference and educational purposes only, never financial advice, and Traderista accepts no responsibility for the financial decisions you make from it.
Your firm's daily-loss rule, as a percent of the balance.
Your firm's overall drawdown rule.
Open + closed, net. Negative for a loss, capped at 2× your daily loss limit.
Open + closed, net. Negative for a loss, capped at 2× your total loss limit.

These thresholds are based on widely-accepted prop-trading community norms. They are not investment advice.
Same calculator, three outcomes
Reading the calculator in three steps
Enter your account size and your firm's two loss caps. The daily cap and the total (challenge) cap, both as a percent of the account, straight from your prop firm's rules.
Enter today's net P&L. Open plus closed, combined. Use the − / + toggle to mark it as a loss; a profitable day spends none of the buffer.
Enter the challenge's net P&L so far, then read the buffers. The panel tints amber at 50% of the daily cap used and red past 80%, showing what's left in dollars and percent for both caps.
Daily buffer used vs. what the calculator shows
| Daily buffer used | State | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| < 50% | Safe | More than half of today's daily cap is still unspent |
| 50% – 80% | Caution | Less than half the daily cap remains |
| > 80% | High risk | One more losing trade risks breaching the daily cap |
What keeps a challenge alive, and what ends it
- Checking the buffer before the next trade, not after a loss already happened.
- Sizing new trades to the buffer that's actually left, not the original daily cap.
- Treating a losing day as a signal to stop trading for the day, not a signal to trade bigger.
- Trading past a daily loss most of the way spent, chasing a way back to flat.
- Losing track of open positions' unrealized P&L when checking the buffer.
- Treating the total-loss cap as the only limit that matters, most challenges fail on the daily one.
Frequently asked questions
What is a prop firm drawdown calculator?
A tool that tracks how much of a prop firm's daily and total loss limits you have left, in both dollars and percent, from your account size and today's trading result.
What counts toward the daily loss limit?
Open and closed P&L combined into one net figure for the day. A profit counts as zero against the limit; only a net loss spends the buffer.
Why does 50% used turn amber instead of green?
This calculator's green edge is exclusive: under 50% is safe, and 50% itself is already the caution boundary. That's the opposite inclusivity from the Position Size calculator, where exactly 2% risk is still green.
What happens if I breach a loss limit?
This calculator doesn't submit anything anywhere, it only shows you the number. Most prop firms end the challenge the moment a loss limit is breached, which is why the buffer is worth checking before the next trade, not after.
Why can't I enter an unlimited loss?
Today's P&L and Challenge P&L so far are each capped at twice the loss limit they map to. A real breach still shows honestly as a negative buffer; the cap only stops a figure wildly out of proportion to the account and caps you entered above.
